Effective Karate?!

There is a great deal of bad press about the effectiveness of Karate. Much of this bad press is unfortunately justified with the "typical" karate club teaching "school boy" karate with little or no combat effectiveness, displaying little understanding of the principles that underlie the techniques they are teaching. They are disillusioned in the effectiveness of what they are doing or simply run black belt mills; so as long as you turn up and pay your fee you will eventually achieve your black belt irrelevant of your ability.  These types of Karate clubs have widely become known as Mcdojo's.

However there is a great deal of effectiveness to be found in Karate if you look hard enough. The work of renown people like Iain Abernethy, Vince Morris, etc is evidence of this.

Further more there are associations like Daigaku Karate Kai that embrace effective karate and teach, in my opinion, how karate should be taught. The fact is you should not dismiss any art just because it is not in fashion or is not wrapped in the package that you choose. Keep your mind open and you may just find that the local "Pyjama clad army" is what you're looking for!!

I attempted to highlight the effectiveness of karate by organising the "Karate - The Practical Fighting Art" seminar.

I have taken much from the Karate world, below is but a few that gave me reassurance that Karate is an effective, deep martial art:

In no particular order:

Dave Keen
Steve Rowe
Chris Rowen
Gavin Mulholland
Tim Nicklin
Dan Lewis
Mike Clark

I highly endorse the above instructors and recommend you train with them should the opportunity arise. Of course there are many other proficient instructors....

Please note: I have not studied with the above instructors for any length of time, most of them have taught me at seminars, with the exception of Dave Keen (my Goju-ryu instructor).
